Quick Guide to Promoting Leadership Skills in Your Mentees

Every kid has leadership potential inside of them. Some adolescents and young adults are comfortable speaking in front of groups or leading meetings. Others would rather write a letter to their community newspaper or school. Still, some teenagers prefer to talk to a teacher about an upcoming project or discuss their life dreams with a mentor.

As a coach or mentor, you can play a vital role in nurturing the leadership skills of your mentees and watching them grow. Today, Jamaal "Trell" Cottrell shares a quick guide for leading youth to realize their potential!

Know Your “Why”

First, learn the benefits of mentoring youth, and remember them when you meet challenges.

●      When you mentor youth, you can help them overcome challenges and excel academically.

●      You can help them lay a firm foundation for a successful career and family life.

●      Mentors can help adolescents and young adults develop positive relationships with their families and friends.

●      You can teach them the importance of resilience and how to learn from mistakes. This will serve them for the rest of their lives!

Act It Out

The most effective way of teaching your mentee about leadership is to live it out yourself!

●      Set goals for yourself. It could be pursuing a job promotion, leading a community event, or going back to school for an advanced degree in Information Technology.

●      Maintain healthy routines. Eat a nutritious diet, exercise regularly, and prioritize a good night’s sleep.

●      Show patience and kindness to everyone you encounter in your daily life.

●      Discuss your past failures with your mentee to show them that it’s OK to make mistakes.

Set Initiatives

There are countless qualities worth fostering in your mentees. Here are a few leadership characteristics to focus on:

●      Teach your mentees how to make informed and confident decisions.

●      Show them how to communicate effectively with their parents, teachers, coaches, and community leaders.

●      Help them develop critical problem-solving skills.

●      Teach them the power of listening to and respecting others.

If you want to play a part in improving the lives of youth in your community, becoming a mentor is an excellent way to do it. Consider the tips above as you learn how to best connect with the adolescents and young adults in your life, and constantly look for ways to improve your approach. Before long, you will be helping your mentees grow into strong leaders in their communities and beyond!

Psychological fitness — or mental health — can be measured by assessing levels of anxiety, depression, stress, self-esteem, satisfaction, positive relationships, responsibility and competence. A person with high anxiety levels and poor relationships is not as psychologically fit as someone with low anxiety levels and rich relationships.
